Social Media is taking up more and more space in our lives every day. In Norway, people who use filters or Photoshop on social media will now have to indicate this with a label. Otherwise, they will be punished by law. The details of the news prepared by Sahne Media editors are as follows:
Social media is struggling with the concept of “body shaming.” This situation, which is particularly prevalent among young users, puts pressure on people to be beautiful at all times. As a result, the internet is flooded with filtered and shopped photos.
Cyberbullying is Everywhere
As is known, the concept we call body shaming is, for example, people who are overweight are subjected to severe insults and criticism just because of this. One of the victims of body shaming, which is an important part of cyberbullying, was Vin Diesel. As a result, people are trying to hide the filters they use or edit their photos in order to cope with this bullying. The Norwegian Government has also decided to bring this issue under legal regulation.
Influencers and Brands Are Expected to Be Affected by This
In order to combat unrealistic beauty standards, the Norwegian Ministry of Children and Family has recently decided that using filters and Photoshop on social media posts and hiding it is a crime. The bill they submitted to the parliament was passed into law with 72 votes in favor to 15 votes against. From this date on, people in Norway will have to use a label designed by the ministry when they manipulate their photos. In fact, this law currently binds influencers and brands more than individual users. For now, of course.
Fines and Prison Sentences on the Agenda
The Norwegian Ministry of Children and Family is essentially trying to instill in young people that they don't have to be perfect, that it's completely natural. It's trying to prevent people from getting psychologically damaged by looking at these fictional photos. Those who violate this newly enacted law will first be punished with a fine, then with imprisonment.
